The bastide towns of Rouergue

Whether it's a village from the Romanesque period nestling under the protective gaze of a castle (Najac) or a Benedictine monastery (Rieupeyroux, Villeneuve), with a new district crowded against the old, or else a bastide town where the streets where carts once passed all lead to a huge arcaded square designed for holding markets (La Bastide-l’Evêque, Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, Villefranche-de-Rouergue), every 'site du Pays d'art et d'histoire' (districts of art and history) tell their own collective story in the Aveyron: town planning in the Middle Ages and the development of the market economy.
